The beneficiation of platinum group metals (PGMs) from pristine (unweathered) sulfide ores has conventionally been conducted through froth flotation, which typically achieves platinum recoveries of over 85%. The achieved successes of PGM concentration by flotation from the pristine sulfide ores are largely due to the occurrence …
An investigation into the effects of UG2 Ore variability on froth flotation. South Africa is the world's largest producer of platinum group elements (PGEs). Mining takes place in the …
Flotation of Platinum Group metals. PGMs ores originated from an ore body along The Great Dyke in Zimbabwe. The Great Dyke holds the world's 2nd largest reserves of Platinum Group Metals and chrome (Kotze, 2020). Ore samples and industrial flotation reagents were supplied by Mimosa Mining Company (Pvt) Ltd.
amounts of gangue material, comprising of 45% quartz, 21% chabazite and 33% of magnetite. The ICP-OES analysis showed that this particular non-sulphide PGM ore is a low-grade ore with an average 4E head assays of 2.37ppm. In the preliminary flotation stage, three reagent suites made up of (i) a collector, (ii) a co-
The presented study is devoted to a comparative review of the mineral raw material base of platinum group metals (PGMs) and technologies of their processing in South Africa and Russia, the largest PGM producers. ... a special focus on flotation processes), as well as difficulties encountered by enterprises at the processing stage, as ...
In general, platinum metals recoveries increase when the two-stage leaching process is used in a countercurrent mode. During a two-stage leaching process in solutions containing 170 g lŒ1 HCl, platinum extraction exceeded 99%, while extraction of palladium and platinum metals associates was over 90%. The platinum metals recoveries as a …
This chapter describes the production of concentrates containing the platinum-group metals (PGMs). South Africa is the largest primary producer of PGMs followed by Russia. South African ores typically contain 3–4 g/tonne of PGM ore, which becomes 100–200 g/tonne after flotation. There are two main types of ores namely; feldspathic ...

In South Africa, the largest platinum-group metal deposit is the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC), containing 3-9 g/t platinum-group metals in ore, associated with base metals (Ni, Cu, etc.) with ...
Russia and South Africa are the world's leading producers of platinum group elements (PGEs). This places them in a unique position regarding the supply of these two key industrial commodities. The …

Platinum-group minerals are usually beneficiated by flotation or gravity separation followed by flotation. Due to poor liberation characteristics and interstitial …
Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) play a significant role in the manufacturing of catalysts, super alloys, electronics, space materials, biomedical equipments, jewellery, etc. due to their excellent ...
The Kell Process has been developed for the extraction of platinum group metals (PGMs)and base metals from sulphide flotation concentrates. The process has been successfully tested on several different sulphide flotation concentrates, including those from the UG2 chromitite horizon and the Platreef mafic/ultramafic layer.

It is well known that Russia and South Africa are the major producers of platinum group metals and hold the world's largest reserves of minerals bearing these metals. Cawthorn [1] has estimated that South Africa has reserves and resources of platinum group elements (PGEs) of about 85,000 metric tons. In Russia, Norilsk alone has Pt and Pd
The metallurgical materials of platinum metals mainly include platinum metal concentrate, and the secondary resources of platinum metals. The former can be classified into three types: gravity concentrate, flotation concentrate of primary platinum ore, flotation concentrate of copper sulfide and nickel ore in platinum metals.
An investigation was carried out to determine the effects of collector concentration on the grade and recovery in the flotation of middle group 1-3 Platinum Group Metal (PGM) ore mixture.
Direct leaching of oxidic PGM ore using different acids yielded relatively low PGM extractions. Leaching in hydrochloric acid achieved extractions of 36.6% Pt and 8.8% Pd, nitric acid achieved extractions of 34.5% Pt and 7.1% Pd. The best leaching results were obtained using aqua regia, with extractions of 48% Pt and 24.5% Pd.
A traditional method for extracting platinum group metals from ores containing little or no chromite, such as the Merensky Reef ore in the Republic of South Africa, consists of comminution and flotation to produce a concentrate containing platinum group metals and sulphides of nickel, copper and iron.
About 80% of the worlds' reserves for platinum group metals (PGMs) are in South Africa's Bushveld Igneous Complex. Processing of PGM involves comminution, flotation, smelting, …
Methods of characterizing and recovering the platinum group minerals are reviewed in this paper. First, a classification of platinum group minerals (PGMs) ore types is briefly introduced, followed by the introduction of some representative platinum group minerals. Second, the sample preparation techniques for mineralogy studies are …
Almost always the PGM deposits contain nickel minerals. The PGM deposits can be classified into the following two groups: (a) PGM-dominated deposits and (b) nickel …
The mineralogy of the platinum-group elements from some copper-nickel deposits of the Sudbury area, Ontario. A detailed mineralogical investigation was made of 25 samples from nine deposits geographically encircling the Sudbury basin. This study has resulted in the identification and characterization of 13….
The platinum-group metal content was more than twice that of a rougher concentrate, and the Al2O3 and CaO contents were significantly lower (see table 7). Because flotation concentrates would be subsequently treated by smelting-leaching or direct leaching techniques to recover platinum-group metals, impurity contents are an …
